'WOMEN BREAKING BARRIERS IN THE AMERICAN JAZZ INDUSTRY'
American Studies Senior Thesis (Fall 2020)
ABSTRACT:
Since the inception of jazz music in the United States, female composers, arrangers, bandleaders,
instrumentalists, and vocalists who have dedicated their lives to this genre are too often
overlooked by their male counterparts. Female jazz artists experienced prejudice in the jazz
world and endured sexism as well as a lack of opportunities in the field for decades. In looking at
the evolution of women in American jazz music, many female jazz musicians have historically
played an essential role in encouraging dialogue, combating discrimination, and breaking down
the barriers of a male-dominated industry. Female jazz artists continue to face obstacles toward
full equality in the jazz world, but work to be agents of social change in the liberation of women
musicians in the American jazz sphere by pushing against limitations created through
oppression, prejudice, and stereotypes.

"Narrating Your Personal Timeline with Instagram"
Intro to American Studies Final (Spring 2019)
This video explores the history of Instagram, how it came to be, how it became a part of my life, and ways to use it more effectively. It has it's little mistakes, but ultimately, life is full of mistakes so it was a great learning experience. I used Procreate, iMovie, and the screen recording feature of my Apple devices paired with some music to tell this story. Instagram makes me excited and worried for our current generation, but if we can use the app in an effective manner then we can all lead creative, fulfilling lives.
"Beyond Reality, Imagination: Imaging Ourselves, Technology, and the Natural World Around Us"
Religion in Modern Art FINAL (SPRING 2019)

Beyond Reality, Imagination exhibition map.
This project prompted the students in the Religion and Modern Art class to take what they learned about different artists, the curation of museum exhibitions, and works that we felt moved by, and put them into the context of our very own exhibition.
Here's the description our the exhibition:
Beyond Reality, Imagination: Imaging Ourselves, Technology, and the Natural World Around Us
Curated by Adriana Mullin & Kathryn Kearney
Presenting an array of modern and contemporary art, in a variety of forms including sculpture, traditional paintings, photography, mixed media, videos, performance, and installations, this exhibition considers the power of imagination. Incorporating both indoor and outdoor spaces this exhibition aims to provide a space for individuals to reflect on the past and look to the future through the core theme of imagined realities spanning across the exhibition. Beyond Reality, Imagination creates a space that fosters interaction, and reflection, pushing viewers to imagine realities beyond their own, with a focus on identity and the natural world around us.
Beyond Reality, Imagination embodies the innovation and creativity present in our world despite the adversities people and our environment face in a world of continued xenophobia, conflict, and climate change. This exhibition embodies the beliefs of curators Adriana Mullin and Kathryn Kearney that imagination and art have the power to transcend reality, providing hope for a more just and sustainable future.
Nature is a uniting life force that allows us to appreciate ephemeral beauty and see ourselves as part of a greater whole. However, as much of the following artworks convey, the environment is in grave danger and we only have so much time before centuries of harmful exploitation catch up with us. It is our duty as inhabitants of this earth to reflect upon our relationship with the planet that sustains us and reform our own identities for a better future.
The only way global issues such as climate change and inequality can be addressed is through unprecedented innovation, stretching the human mind and imagination to undiscovered realms. It will require the ability to create new realities and redefine cultural standards about identity and human existence.
The wide array of art forms helps to reflect the exhibitions aim to encourage imagination, not limited to any one form. The exhibition’s art as well as its structure extend beyond the confines of reality. Beyond Reality, Imagination simulates a journey, beginning in a more traditional gallery space exploring and questioning our current reality. The works inside are aimed to evoke visitors to question our roles in society and reflect on the realities associated with our identities and our actions to begin imagining ourselves beyond the confines of inequality and climate change. At the center of the exhibition glistening reflection pools create a transition to the outside space of the exhibit. The two courtyards and wooded area are each home to large scale installations. The outdoor installations enable a transition from self reflection to a greater reflection on the environment we live in. The surreal appearance of each outdoor installation is aimed to inspire and encourage imagination, a reflection of the artists innovation and their use of creativity as a means to imagine new realities.
Throughout the exhibition, we encourage viewers to interact with the space that fosters a full body experience. In curating an exhibition with a wide range of spaces and art forms, Beyond Reality, Imagination is an exhibition that is geared towards creating an impact and inspiring innovation through channeling our imagination. The works included in the exhibition are focused on recognizing and reflecting on our past and present while also imagining a future that pushes beyond the current confines of our reality. We ask viewers to no only reflect on the past and imagine new realities, but to create them as well.
